Ship’s Store
The Ship’s Chandlery

scrimshaw.jpg

In the days of sail, a ship’s chandlery was a store that sold such things as rope, canvas, nautical equipment and everything a sea bound sailor would need on his voyage. It became a meeting place for sailors looking for shipping notices, those looking for new ships to sign on to and in general the place where they would outfit their sea chests before they set out to sea.

Our Chandlery is going to reflect what we love most, the Sea. Here you’ll find all sorts of nautical surprises, some antiques, some new items. You can purchase your Barrel no.51 T-shirts here, our gift bags and other Barrel no.51 items as well as scrimshaw, that ancient sailor’s art, done on genuine Mammoth tusk. The scrimshaw is done by our friend Terry Christian, a descendant of Fletcher Christian that had somewhat of a disagreement with Captain Bligh and His Majesty’s Navy. Terry is also the one that has designed all of our labels.

You’ll find art work, genuine antiques, flotsam and jetsam that we’ve picked up along our travels. Everything’s for sale, and since most of it’s one of a kind items, you’d better toss your cable around what ya like, ‘cause it may be gone on the next tide.

Look around, enjoy yourself, and let us know if there’s something in particular regarding nautical items that you’re looking for. We love nothing more than to go exploring along the coast of the Pacific Northwest, and we keep our eyes peeled for treasures every time we go out.

Terry Christian is an award winning scrimshander, whose work has won multiple competitions including those held at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic Connecticut. His pieces hold places of honor in several prominent private collections from Hawaii to Maine. He’s been working his craft for over 25 years, and the quality of his work shows the attention to detail and historical accuracy that his profession demands. A descendant of the notable seafarer, Fletcher Christian of HMS Bounty fame, Terry’s love of the sea is expressed in his maritime art.

Each piece of ivory is fossilized Mammoth or Walrus ivory. The Mammoth ivory is 100 to 2,500 years old. Most ivory is found as the result of natural erosion. It is collected by Alaskan natives, providing an income to them without endangering living species.

The ivory is carefully selected for its natural beauty, color and size. Colors found in the ivory are a result of minerals in the surrounding earth, giving each piece its individual and distinct characteristics. When Terry is satisfied that the subject will blend with the natural beauty of the ivory, he begins his work.

Terry is an accomplished Pacific Northwest graphic designer with over 25 years of experience. His work has received international recognition. He is an avid scuba diver and his love for marine life is often reflected in his work.

Any one of these pieces will be a beautiful and eclectic addition to your home, lend an adventurous and nautical flavor to your decor, and reflect your impeccable artistic taste. It will be a treasured piece of nautical lore that will be handed down to your children and grandchildren for many generations to come.
